THE VIRAL NATURE OF CITIES
I like within the pages of Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles the idea that the World is sick and that civilisation, or cities, are a virus. I don’t know if this idea is a truism, or can be found to be the opinion of many clever folk, I just, for personal reasons, enjoy that idea. Why?
Well, let’s take a look at a civilisation, I’ll use England or Great Britain as an example, this green and pleasant land is now ugly, in most places and deformed, rotting, a gross expanse of concrete and dirty looking stone houses, or tenements, the people that are found inhabiting town or city centres look depressed, some of them grim and dangerous, at night, particularly on a Friday and Saturday night town and city centres become over crowded with drunken, sometimes violent, people. Walking through such a centre sober on one of this nights is terribly unpleasant, I find. Our roads are clogged with metallic beasts, that the British appear obsessed with, check out the popularity of the TV show Top Gear, it doesn’t matter that fumes from these horrendous, and in a lot of cases, unnecessary machines are a cause of the rise of asthma amongst young children. In towns and city centres when people aren’t obsessed with getting drunk they’re obsessed with shopping, with eating, with relinquishing their humanity and embracing consumerism. Venturing out into the countryside isn’t an escape from cities, everywhere you go in this green and pleasant land there’s trash, rubbish, refuge, from food and drink packaging and fly tipping, the countryside is infected with the waste of the towns and cities.
Civilisation has bred into us isolation, violence and crime are at epidemic levels, cram too many people into small areas, people who have very little connection with one another, very little in common and there’s bound to be upheaval, mindless outbreaks of insanity, of horror. The idea of civilisation hasn’t been for the betterment of humankind, it’s been at the expense of the majority, a minority of people have manipulated and controlled us throughout the history of civilisation. We are not free, we can never be free living in towns and cities, in so called civilised nations, we will always be slaves, to someone, or thing, money for example, a big example. Most people are slaves to a wage, depend upon, not enough cash to drag them through their lives. We have no choice, not any more, and the virus of cities is getting worst, especially with the failing global economy, what is to become of us?
CUP, SWORD, WAND AND PENTACLE
In Promethea Alan Moore explains the purpose of the objects of a Magicians tools, which are handily part of the symbols in the Tarot, known as the Minor Arcana.
Cups represents emotions, especially that of love. Swords represents reason, wands represents creativity and will and pentacles represents material body or possessions.
Each symbol also represents an element Cups water, Swords air, Wands fire and Pentacles earth.
ASANA
As I am studying Magick primarily via Crowley’s book Magick, as part of my study I am learning to meditate, slowly, asana is a form of position in Yoga.
I attempt as much meditation as possible as often as possible, unfortunately my memory is rather poor, and getting poorer, and sometimes I forget to meditate, though I do meditate more often than not, though I don’t always record my efforts, again damn my poor memory.
MAGICKAL PRACTICE
I managed a mere two minutes of meditation Saturday night, rubbish and unacceptable, but I did have this feeling, and kind of felt, I was swamped with a white light, which was perceptible even though my eyes remain closed, I felt at peace, with everything, like I was one with the Universe, it was only a feeling, and one brought on by my own imagination, naturally.
