THE OZ FACTOR
In The Invisibles Dane McGowan’s initiation into The Invisibles, at stages, resembles the modern day myth of alien abductions. He, in several scenes, experiences what the UFO researcher, Jenny Randles, calls ‘The Oz Factor,’ which of course is a reference to Dorothy’s, fictional, adventures in the Land of Oz. Experiencing altered states of consciousness, time slips, witnessing the appearance of UFO’s, aliens and other paranormal events falls into this category of the unusual. I find that I prefer the idea that people can have very weird experiences, but that these experiences have no basis in the material World, as though, for a moment, they fell down the rabbit hole, or indeed were swept away to another land. It makes sense that most, if not all, paranormal and supernatural events occur at night, when a person/people are not fully conscious, or reaching a period of tiredness, we are at our most susceptible to hallucinations, or altered states of consciousness, when tired, or just waking from, partially, from sleep. In my opinion at least.
A GLAMOUR
In Promethea Jack Faust uses a glamour to disguise his true appearance, these days glamour means something completely different to the original meaning. It was originally a magickal act that was used to alter the appearance of an individual so they would look attractive. Obviously these days, with Magick being merely forgotten or considered nothing more than hocus pocus, a glamour is achieved via other more materialistic means. But is still illusion, perhaps, though we don’t recognise it as such, still Magick.
HUMAN SACRIFICE
In Crowley’s Magick it touches, briefly, on the concept of human sacrifice. Aleister Crowley during his lifetime was accused of such things, partly due to the fact he liked to kid people into believing he was far more wicked than he actually was, and people being reactionary, and a little stupid, took him to be a Satanist.
Throughout human history there have been examples, in cultures we consider primitive, of human sacrifice, indeed today, in these more enlightened times, such things are still a possibility, you only have to read the statistics of disappearances from country to country to be startled at how many people simply vanish each year, naturally most lost people have just ran away and started a new life, some have killed themselves, their bodies never found, some have been lost in accidents, and again their bodies not yet discovered, some people are kidnapped and sold into slavery (yes, surprisingly this does happen) and others are kidnapped for more sinister reasons and you can bet, because folk are crazy, that some people are sacrificed to inhuman, fictional, Gods, Goddesses or demons. It does sound mental, but I can guarantee it happens, after all life, reality, people aren’t just as strange as I, or you, can imagine, life, reality, people are stranger than I, or you, can imagine.
